Jazz. Adolescence. Camaraderie. Effervescence. Aspirations. Potential. Swing Girls, a Japanese film capturing the ebullient spirit of the youth in pursuit for something greater. This film tells the story of a group of high school girls who go on a bumpy journey as they form a jazz band fueled by their fervor and friendship.

Set in the hot summer of Japan, the students escape from their makeup class to deliver their school band team’s lunches. As they are having fun on their bus ride, they miss their stop, and by the time they reach the school to deliver them, the lunches eaten by the band have caused them to get sick from food poisoning due to getting spoiled from the heat. The only player who didn’t eat lunch decides to replace his sick band mates with the girls who delivered their lunches. Initially they’re hesitant, but soon enough they enjoy their place in the band. But when the original members of the band recover, the girls decide to create their own band, with a whole journey ahead of them.

The film doesn’t have human antagonists; Instead, the girls had to face challenges caused by the circumstances they were dealing with. These include the girls not having experience with instruments, them having to find a way to earn money to buy their own instruments, dealing with disappointment from their public showcases, missing their audition deadline, and so much more. But no matter what roadblock came along, the girls always found a way to remove it. They gradually uncovered the talent they didn’t know they had. They gradually formed connections with each other through their spirited energy that fueled their creativity. They embrace their journey with uncertainty along with the excitement of stepping into their future. Through jazz, the genre known for its spontaneous creativity, they were allowed to break free from limitations and dream bigger.

Watching Swing Girls reminded me of the hopefulness I’ve felt from time to time as a teenager. The film instilled in me the belief that anything is possible, regardless of the obstacles you face and the opinions of others who doubt your abilities. It reminds me of embracing the unknown and finding strength in community even in the most uncertain times. The exuberant energy of each character throughout the film serves as a wonderful reminder that not every journey needs to begin perfect and flawless, but they can begin with a lot of chaos and a lot of heart.
