Waves (2019):
“Self Control”- Frank Ocean
Captures the instance when Tyler’s emotions burst, and realization settles in about the reality that he has set himself into.
“Seigfried”- Frank Ocean
Mirrors the isolation that Tyler goes through after his emotions spill over.
“IFHY”- Tyler The Creator
Represents the toxic emotions that occur throughout the movie. The love that Tyler has for his girlfriend is turning into an obsession, and overall, his actions throughout the film are driven by a need for control and the fear instilled in him by his father.
“LVL”- A$AP Rocky
Represents the numbness that occurs after Tyler realizes that he killed Alexis.
Chungking Express (1994):
“This Night Has Opened My Eyes”- The Smiths
The song matches the film’s intimate moments between the characters when they’re together.
“Remember Summer Days”- Anri
This song perfectly captures the film’s themes of nostalgia and joy, especially when Faye Wong’s character is dancing or having fun at her job.
“You Are the Right One”- Sport
Captures the romantic energy that occurs between the characters.
Bones and All (2022):
“I Want Someone Badly”- Jeff Buckley
Captures Maren’s yearning for connection as her cannibalistic urges set her apart from not only her peers, but her father, who leaves her.
“Go Slowly”- Radiohead
Represents the intimate moments between Maren and Lee. At the end of the song, it represents a possible, normal life together, where they can coexist carefully.
” I Know It’s Over”- Jeff Buckley
Represents the ending of their love. Maybe their love was doomed to begin with; while their violent urges made them be there for each other, it was also dangerous for each other.
“Beautiful Boy” (2018):
“Visions of Gideon”- Sufjan Stevens
The heartbreak David feels watching his only son struggle with addiction, especially his feeling of helplessness.
Beautiful Boy- John Lennon
David sings “Beautiful Boy” to Nic in the film when he was a little boy, and since it’s the same title as the movie, I think it’s the most representative song for this film.
“Savior Complex”- Phoebe Bridgers
Represents David’s desperation to save Nic. He goes around searching for him constantly, wanting to be there for his son, no matter how many times he relapses.
“Silver Soul”- Beach House
Represents the cyclical nature of Nic’s addiction and relapse, especially in the last part of the movie, when Nic was doing super well, before suddenly relapsing. I think it’s representative of any addiction that recovery is not linear, and you have to go up and down the stairs to finally reach the top.
